Never before has such a comprehensive, detailed and at the same time exceptionally gripping written work about aerial warfare over Europe been available. The author himself is now publishing a thoroughly revised, new edition of his book.
Manuel Wolf describes the aerial war which was fought over all of Europe’s major theatres of war. With his flowing, lively narrative style the author explains each sequence of events in a wholly innovative way, basing his chapters on themes and life histories as well as chronological events. The wealth of extraordinarily detailed information helps the reader to comprehend the overall military context, both on the ground and in the air. All the important types of aircraft are compared in a unique, never before published summary of the technical data. Identification markings on the aircraft involved in the incidents are illustrated and the losses on individual battle days listed in a table. The book describes pioneering, technical developments comprehensibly and depicts aerial combat in a precise and exciting way. Impressive, colourful images reveal to the reader the drama of the dogfights.
For twelve years Manuel Wolf conducted research worldwide and made an extensive study of the relevant literature. He interviewed surviving pilots and contemporary witnesses, gained access to the personal archives of the deceased and exchanged views with aerial combat experts from all over Europe.
No reader with an interest in military history can afford to miss this masterpiece with more than 700 photos, aircraft profiles in colour, maps and accurately detailed scenarios.

Air War over Europe 1939 – 1945 The Luftwaffe tested to the limit eBook Manuel Wolf Rob Fernley Reviews

As a German, I got my hands on the version in German language first - of course. It took some time, but now this incredible book is available in English for the international market. And that is good news, because the book is impressive in tree ways

1.) Impressive because of the mass of information. I know no other book, that can compare with this one.

2.) Even for the military untrained eye, a lot of detailed Maps end explaining graphics provide the reader with interesting information that helps to understand the military situation at that given time.

3.) The pictures. They are extraordinary. Dr. Wolf dug out a lot of very rare photos I never saw before. And he produced new ones - made with Photoshop from photos from Models. So he created some exiting sights from dogfights. Do you remember when you were young? You saw those wonderful paintings on the packages of AIRFIX-Models? The are alike - but better. These pieces of art would also look good in a frame at the wall.

This book is worth every cent! Highly recommended!
I learned, that you can get your copy also vie Mr. Wolfs website.
This book clearly is the result of extensive research. It is the best depiction of the European air war that I have found. The facts are carefully researched and documented. The human suffering is linked in such a spellbinding manner that it is hard to put the book down. The author has successfully combined a reference volume with entertainment. I will not hesitate to recommend this volume to any one interested in aviation or history.
Dr. Manuel Wolf’s Air War over the Europe 1939-1945 came as what I would describe a minor shock to me. It must have been several decades since I was so completely taken aback by a book. This magnificent, 832-page, 22 cm x 29 cm, 3.5 kg book is incredibly impressive by its sheer volume alone. But that is actually nothing compared with its content. I am completely breathless.

The 800+ pages are loaded with a fantastic wealth of information about the German Luftwaffe in action in World War II. I have been a student of the subject for over 40 years, and have written 20+ books on the subject, but still I find tons of material in this book that was new to me. The narrative gives everything one could wish for A chronological description of the history, as well as accurately detailed descriptions of certain events.

To give just one example of the latter The air battle between the Luftwaffe Sturm fighters and the Eight Air Force bombers on 7 July 1944 is described on no less than 40 pages (pp. 436-475). These include 29 illustrations Two large color illustrations, one a schematic illustration of a Sturmgruppe approaching the bomber targets, and one a painting illustrating the scene when the FW 190 Sturmböcke rode through the devastated Liberator formation. There also is a large color map showing the location of the air battle, and two color profiles of a Liberator which was shot down in the battle (complete with the identification of the crew and its fate) and the Fw 190 flown by the German unit commander in the battle. The narrative in this particular chapter is supplemented by clear information in four graphic tables, one of which covers a whole page (p. 456) and lists the detailed combat results for each of the participating eighteen Luftwaffe units.

The book is littered with charts and tables of losses etc, color illustrations of Luftwaffe tactics etc, historically accurate color paintings (often covering a whole page) that illustrate events described in the narrative, maps in color, aircraft profiles in color and wartime photographs, including many in color and several that I have never seen before. From the photos, it is evident that Dr. Wolf has selected them carefully, and they are always placed in close connection with the descriptions in the narrative, which adds a dramatic dimension to the reading.

All in all, it is a heavily illustrated book with over 700 photos. It is printed on high-quality medium gloss paper, which makes the images look excellent. Apart from the many exciting snaps from gun cameras, most of the images are crisp clear.

Perhaps one could have wished for a name index in the book, but it contains a unit index, and after all—it is a 832-page book, and I would not like to take out any of the thrilling contents for a name index.

Among several special advantages of this book is that Dr. Wolf also supplements the main story of the Luftwaffe with information and descriptions of its opponents. Thus, for instance, a whole chapter, titled “The Kiss of Death” (pp. 246-262), is dedicated to the Soviet female combat pilots of the war—complete with two color maps, a color painting illustrating an aerial combat on the Eastern Front, and two aircraft profiles in color.

The book is available in Edition, but if you can attain it in printing, as I did, I would recommend that you go for that. As a book producer and publisher myself (through I have no economic interest whatsoever in this book), I can tell that printing such a book is not cheap. But I would still recommend anyone interested in the subject to spend the money that a printed edition may cost—it will be one of your life’s best investments in literature about World War II aviation.

I could not recommend any book on the topic more than this one.

An ambitious but very interesting book, which includes some excellent case studies of selected pilots and air battles of the Second World War. The translation from the original German to English has been very well done.
It's all there, stats from both sides, really impressive.
Fantastic historical and factual account of WW2 Air war in the European theater. Surprisingly well detailed and accurate. customer
Hard to follow. Most that I have read. 40 percent so far has nothing to do with Luftwaffe and even though author said he was not bioused , it is clear he is. Still trying to finish reading.
A very nice account of the air war as seen by german Pilots. Lots and lots of personalidades accounts wich add to the fun of reading the historic factos. Mild inaccuracies and excessive land battles descriptions are the only draughbacks.
